Composer's Note
SHORT|BREAD for Solo Cello is a short work that explores modular forms. The work is comprised of musical modules that are all gestural variations on the same idea: a sound that wedges out and then contracts forming a kind of acoustic rhombus “🔶”.
These rhombi are bisected, however, to create individual wedges that crumble at their fringes. These wedges are then re-stitched together to form a larger structure, which itself forms a semi-palindromic wedge.
By the end, the listener has consumed a whole cookie jar of sound, breaking each one in half before eating it.
I extend enormous gratitude to David Dietz for the sensitivity and artful intensity he has brought to this piece.
